Critical Analysis Of King Arthur - 1482 Words

The aspect of being faithful, and being in a monogamous relationship in Le Morte D’Arthur by Thomas Malory can be seen through a psychoanalytic lens regarding the effect of betrayal and cheating. Arthur is King of Camelot, in Britain, and has a group called the Knights of the round table which are well known around the world. These knights are sworn to help each other through everything, as well as to never fight among themselves. One of these knights is Sir Lancelot, who is in love with King Arthur’s wife, Guinevere. When King Arthur becomes aware Lancelot and Guinevere are involved in a love affair, he orders Guinevere’s death. Guinevere is then saved by Lancelot, killing many people, including Knights, through this process.While King†¦show more content†¦In fact, Launcelot, a Knight, is known as â€Å"the most honourable knight of the world, and the man of most worship† (Hacht 385). This however, is an example of antithesis. Although Launcelot is seen as honourable, he betrayed Arthur by cheating with his wife, Guinevere. That is the complete opposite of honourable. This says a lot, because the knights are supposed to be known as the fairest of them all, but not even Launcelot, one of the best regarded knights, is as pure as he’s said to be. The King comes from an impure background, along with his son, and now, so do the knights of the fellowship. A lot of what King Arthur and numerous other characters do in the story can be analyzed through a psychological lens. Literary lenses are different point of views which can be used by authors, writers, or readers, to critically analyze or interpret a piece of literature. These lenses allow critics to â€Å"focus on particular aspects† of a literary piece (Brizee). Psychoanalysis, a theory popularized by Sigmund Freud, is a â€Å"system of interpretation† meant to learn about the unconscious in order to explain why a person acts in the manner they do (Psycho analysis 1). A main area of development that is looked at by scientists is â€Å"early childhood† mainly due to the fact that conflicts which affect the human minds, â€Å"develop in the first years of a person’s life† (Psychoanalysis 1).
